Competence Center Digital Research

As part of the Michael Stifel Center Jena (MSCJ)External link, the currently emerging Competence Center Digital Research (zedif)External link will join expertise to strengthen data-driven and simulation science in Jena. It is the first point of contact for all questions concerning digitized research within the FSU and the MSCJ. It covers the range from mere service to enabling interdisciplinary collaborative research.

The two positions will complement existing expertise in High Performance Computing (HPC) as well as add the topic of Data Exploration and Visualization to the existing expertise in the Competence Center. Alternatively, an addition from other subject areas matching the location and the tasks of the Competence Center is also possible.

Your responsibilities:

High Performance Computing

  • Support of working groups involved in MSCJ regarding HPC demands in close collaboration with the University Computer Center
  • Interdisciplinary, application oriented service and research in close collaboration with the working groups and projects, in particular regarding parallelization, porting and performance optimization of scientific software, especially for distributed storage as well as for heterogeneous systems (including graphic cards)
  • Provision, adaptation and development of HPC techniques, tools and services for the efficient use of parallel computing systems for dedicated applications at the FSU and the MSCJ

Data Exploration and Visualization

  • Support of working groups involved in MSCJ with innovative technologies for visualization and exploration of massive amounts of data
  • Interdisciplinary, application oriented service and research in close collaboration with the working groups and projects, in particular regarding visualization of information, scientific visualization and visual analytics
  • Development and adaptation of procedures for visualization and data exploration for dedicated applications at the FSU and the MSCJ

Both positions

  • Involvement in the establishment of the Competence Center; Establishment of connections within the FSU and the MSCJ
  • Participation in the acquisition of third-party funds for the establishment of the team and for the support of working groups and projects
  • Conceptualization and implementation of measures for facilitating collaborations among working groups; Provision of tools and administration of services from computer science for various disciplines
  • Handling of requests (general counseling, simple applications and counseling on transfer) as well as forwarding requests to the departments with the respective responsibility at FSU
  • Conceptualization and implementation of measures for training
  • In addition, it is expected that the work on a scientific qualification is pursued, e.g., in science management. Respective offers can be found, for example, at the Graduate Academy of the FSU Jena and are supported by the Competence Center.

Our requirements:

High Performance Computing

  • University degree (diploma, master) in a mathematics / computer science related discipline or an engineering / natural sciences related discipline; PhD degree preferred
  • Proven implementation competence in the development of HPC technologies (e.g., parallel algorithms and programming, performance optimization, tools for analyzing scientific software) as well as their application in dedicated interdisciplinary collaborations
  • Research experience in at least one area of HPC or HPC-related in another research field, proven by scientific publications

Data Exploration and Visualization

  • University degree in a discipline appropriate for the position (e.g., STEM disciplines, Digital Humanities); PhD degree preferred
  • Proven implementation competence in the development of software tools for visualization and data exploration
  • Research experience in at least one area of visualization and data exploration, proven by scientific publications

Both positions

  • Experience with interdisciplinary collaborations in a broad sense
  • Experience with the acquisition of third-party funds is advantageous
  • Excellent communication skills among various scientific disciplines
  • Proficiency in English; preferably with additional communication skills in German
